. So Takahashi: 30/30 cd (Carpark 007)
PRESS INFOS: Thirty minutes of audio for 30 empty rooms; this is the theme of
So Takahashis new 30/30 cd for Carpark. Given 30 photos of empty or unused
rooms, so has playfully constructed narrative and memory within. The photos,
taken by Fumiko Nozawa, were displayed in galleries and clubs throughout
North America and Europe as the 30 minute audio piece was played out. As the
exhibit, which was called For Rent, is no longer available for viewing, Carpark
thought the best way to have a more permanent artifact of this experience was to
release the audio on a cd with the 30 photos in a cd booklet.
In the audio, ideas appear and disappear just as humans and other animals enter
and leave a room. Not quite happy to remain out of a space, an idea will return
later in the piece tampered or with additional data about it. Though So Takahashi
has firmly placed his own audio interpretation on these rooms, he still leaves quite
a bit to the participant. The piece can be listened to on its own or while perusing
the photos. More to the point, the photos can be looked at in a number of different
ways and orders. Listen and hear voices talking, crickets chirping, maybe even the
hum of a heater or air conditioning unit.
So has taken the rigorous and humorous elements noticeable on his Nubus release
(Carpark 003) and given them a new visual dimension with 30/30. New possibilities
appear with each additional listen. The Carpark motto for 30/30 is try it again for
the first time.
LANCE COMMENTS: A cool release of constantly evolving experiemental
electronica that shifts back and forth from raster-noton-style or ryoji ikeda-style
minimalism to a denser electronica sound then eventually to a more percussive
experimental techno sound in one long track. Another solid experimental
release from So Takahashi. Fans of Nobuzku Takemura, Ryoji Ikeda, Terre
Thaemlitz, Taylor Deupree, Frank Bretschneider, and Noto should give
this one a listen.

But theres more from So Takahashi
Also out soon on Carpark will be another So Takahashi release, this time in a 12
only format. With this release Carpark will initiate its new 12 series with 1 - 17
minute ambient track and 31 lock grooves.
The a-side is much in the way of current sounds coming from artists like Vladislav
Delay or Kit Clayton. Computer blips and sparks wash over even continuing
tones to make for a sound that changes and stays still at the same time. This is
music that suits the restless and the peaceful. Full of contradictions, so has created
a 12 of electronic minimalism with a mild case of hot flashes.
The b-side contains 31 locked grooves. The grooves range from dance beat-oriented
locks to blasts of noise. Have fun all day hopping back and forth from one locked
groove to another! Sure to appeal as much to the professional dj as to the traditional
trainspotter, Sos locked grooves showcase his clever knack for subtlety and humor
in music.

Forthcoming Carpark label activities
After the So Takahashi releases, Carpark will unleash Jake Mandells newest full
length sometime this winter. It is called Love Songs for Machines and finds
Jake in a poppy almost new wave mode.
Also, the Kit Clayton/Safety Scissors Ping Pong collaboration cd is now slated
for a late winter/early spring release. Unfortunately their match is taking a little
longer to complete than expected. Carpark can also leak out that there will be
another Safety Scissors release on Carpak in 2001.
A slew of other tentative releases are currently planned that cannot be announced
at this time but always keep check back to the official Carpark website at
www.carpark.com for the latest information.
